Time limits for beginning induction

Must ECTs begin induction within a set time limit after completion of ITT?

No, there are no set limits to beginning induction although it would clearly be in everyone’s best interests for the gap between initial training and induction to be as short as possible.

An ECT may work on a supply basis in placements of less than one term, (i.e. which do not count towards induction) but they may only do so for up to 5 years from the point of award of QTS. After this time, the ECT must begin induction in order to continue teaching in a maintained school.

An ECT can work part-time as a short-term supply teacher, while concurrently serving induction in another part-time post after the five-year limit has expired. However, the short-term supply post will not count towards induction.
